The Chairman of the Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) Council, Dr Blessing Mudavanhu, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Albert Chawanda, the University Council, Senate, Staff, and Students, would like to express their heartfelt condolences to the Bhebe family and the entire ZIMCHE community on the untimely passing of veteran educationist, Professor Emeritus Ngwabi Mulunge Bhebe.
Students from Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences flew the university flag high in an exclusive participation at the Zimbabwe Provincial Tourism Innovation challenge that was held at Enopat Hotel in Mutare on the 4th of November 2023.
Running under the theme “Harnessing Innovation for Sustainability”, the challenge saw four students from the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Sciences taking part in the presentation session and the initiative is a brainchild of Zimbabwe Tourism Authority partnering with other Innovation Hubs to incubate as well as mentoring selected winners of the programme.
The Tourism Innovation Challenge is a platform aimed at young innovators aged 30 years and below and the idea is in line with government’s thrust of youth empowerment and poverty alleviation in marginalized groups.
Projects which were showcased contributes to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, attract sustainable tourists, bring economic benefits to local communities.
Outright champion to the challenge Shingirai Zisengwe who managed to scoop a prize of $1000 and a certificate.
In group presentations, 3 students namely Tawanda Mbiriri, Blessing Mukazika and Tadiwanashe Mbiriri also walked away with $500 and a certificate.
Hence, the winner from Manicaland Province will participate in the national competition to be hosted in Harare.
Commenting about the participation, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Albert Chawanda said:
“I believe that the Zimbabwe Tourism Innovation Challenge assist higher and tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe to be innovation hubs that produce graduates with inventive resolutions to the socio-economic challenges that we experience as a nation.
“Above all such competitive platforms are an opportunity for students to develop management and leadership skills which will benefit them in their careers as future leaders
“I therefore applaud the government’s commitment in providing essential activities that encourage, stimulate and promote entrepreneurship among the youth.”
Similar sentiments echoed from the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Sciences Lecturer, Mr.Willard Madhombiro who identified the Tourism Innovation Challenge as crucial in the development of Zimbabwe through innovative ideas.
“The competition is one of the crucial platforms in the tourism sector as it provides an opportunity to identify potential leaders in tourism and provide innovative ideas that can sustainably develop the nation.
“For universities it is part of community engagement as students are given the chance to incubate their ideas,” he said.
The initiative is aimed at providing high quality, consumer-driven, behavioural and targeted case management services to MSUAS students, staff and the community at large.
In his welcome remarks on the launch, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Albert Chawanda said:
“Establishing MSUAS Community Mental Health Centre marks a significant milestone in our commitment to fostering the well-being and holistic development of our students and the broader community in line with the national vision, Vision 2030, which leads the nation towards an upper middle-income economy.
“The Community Mental Health Centre is a safe space where individuals can seek help, find solace and embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery.
“Through a multidisciplinary approach, we aim to provide comprehensive mental health services that address a wide range of challenges, from stress and anxiety to depression as well as trauma.
“Today, we not only celebrating the opening of a physical space but also breaking down of barriers and the destigmatization of mental health.”
Subsequently, the Guest of Honour to the event Dr Mazvita Machinga commended the launch of the Community Mental Health Services Centre as instrumental to the development of the nation taking into consideration the implications of mental health cases students face in institutions of higher learning.
“The launch of the centre on campus is a critical initiative that addresses mental health needs of the student community.
“Mental health is essential for the overall health and affects various aspects of life, including relationships, personal fulfillment, productivity and societal contributions.
“It is no longer a subject that should be whispered or kept in shadows because mental health issues related to students are not just a concern but a call to action, a plea for empathy and a commitment to building a campus where the mental well-being of students is paramount,” said Dr Machinga.
The event brought together students, university staff, representatives from government departments as well as the civic society, all whom were committed on raising awareness on the importance of a community mental health centre in promoting a health and supportive community.
Additionally, the launch was an opportunity for MSUAS students and valued stakeholders to engage in open conversations, learn more about health and mental health mechanisms.
Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences men’s rugby team, flew the University flag in a rugby tournament that was held at Mutare Sports Club earlier this month.
The tournament gave MSUAS Pioneers an opportunity to associate with rugby experts and among the participants were Mutare Sports Club Team A and B, Africa University, Talon’s Rugby Club and Zimbiru.
The team demonstrated an exceptional performance despite being their first participation in a tournament of rugby giants as they competed in five matches across the day, scoring some wonderful tries as well as playing some scintillating rugby.
Coach to the team, Mr Abraham Muchingami, a lecturer in the Department of Tourism commented the performance of MSUAS Pioneers as highly exceptional.

The University remains committed to outside classroom learning activities and highly regards sport as an integral health component in the psycho-social system of students and staff.
In an increasingly complex world where mental health cases such as anxiety, depression and addiction have skyrocketed, Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences officially registered its Community Mental Health Center with the Allied Health Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe.
The initiative which is jointly driven by the Department of Applied Psychology and the Division of Student Affairs, is aimed at providing a high quality, consumer-driven, behavioral and targeted case management services to MSUAS students, staff and the community at large.
Speaking on the Mental Health Centre, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Albert Chawanda said, “The facility is one of its kind in Manicaland as we aim to amplify the University’s community impact on mental health issues. The objective is to create a healthy University community with adequate support systems to address topical, community mental challenges.”
Commenting on the registration, MSUAS Mental Health Specialist, Mrs Tendai Muhle said, “Our mission is to reduce barriers to mental health access by educating students, staff and the community on mental health issues while ensuring clients feel comfortable whilst reaching out for our support.”
The Mental Health Centre is located in the Health Services Centre and is currently offering services such as individual, couple and family therapy; group therapy, interventions with individuals and families for treatment of emotional and behavioral problems.
The center boasts of a team of highly qualified professionals, including psychologists and counselors who are dedicated to providing individual therapy, group support sessions, and psychiatric evaluations. The University Community can access a range of services tailored to their unique needs and circumstances while confidentiality and privacy are prioritized to guarantee safe space for clients to share their concerns.

REHEARSALS
All graduands are required to attend the Graduation Rehearsal at the Graduation Arena, on Wednesday the 13th of December 2023 at 1400hours in full graduation attire. Please note that rehearsals are compulsory.

Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) hosted a health fair organized by the University’s Health Services Department
Running under the theme, ‘Know your Health Service Providers’, the fair aimed at creating awareness of health issues that affect students and staff in their day to day lives as well as connecting them with representatives from various health professions.
The event provided an opportunity to learn more about HIV and AID, mental health issues, physical health as well as encouraged HIV self-testing for all attendees.
Stakeholders who attended the fair included; SAYWHAT, UNESCO, Red Cross, New Start Center and the fair was punctuated by a lot of fun-filled activities that included music and dance.
The MSUAS Health Services Department is the process of registering a Mental Health Centre to curb mental health issues as well as drug and substance abuse that affect the young generation nowadays.
